Grantee Stories

From time to time, we hope to provide more in-depth stories about projects supported by the Catherine Donnelly Foundation.

DAVID SUZUKI FOUNDATION

David Suzuki Foundation logo The Catherine Donnelly Foundation provided a grant in June 2008 to the David Suzuki Foundation in support of a project with the overarching goal to secure the implementation of a Species and Ecosystem Protection Act (SEPA) in British Columbia. According to the David Suzuki Foundation a "new Species and Ecosystem Protection Act (SEPA) is critical to maintaining, for present and future generations, the biological richness with which we are blessed with and the associated ecosystem services (e.g., water supply, climate regulation, pollination) that sustain the health and wellbeing of our communities."
The following article that highlights aspects of the SEPA project was submitted by the David Suzuki Foundation:

“British Columbia is blessed with an exceptional diversity of wildlife on par with the Serengeti and the Great Barrier Reef . . . ”

THE PEMBINA FOUNDATION

Pembina logo The Catherine Donnelly Foundation provided a grant in December 2009 to the Pembina Foundation in support of the Redfish School of Change, a six week experiental field school "designed for young people ready to create change in the world.”
The following article that highlights the Redfish School of Change project was submitted by the Pembina Foundation:

“By participating in the Redfish School of Change program, I acquired the kind of experience that provides one with life-changing insights . . .”

SKYWORKS FOUNDATION

Skyworks logo In December of 2007, the Catherine Donnelly Foundation approved a grant to the Skyworks Foundation in support of their "Home Safe Toronto" project. Home Safe Toronto focuses on the relationship between the growing scarcity of affordable, safe, and secure housing and the increasing job crisis. Thousands of families in central Canada are losing manufacturing jobs with benefits and being forced into non-secure, low-paying jobs with no benefits. Home Safe Toronto reveals the struggles of a growing number of people in the expanding low-wage workforce, and those working for their welfare cheque. It shows how families are dealing with homelessness or precarious housing and how they are being faced with the impossible choice of putting food on the table or putting a roof over their heads.
Skyworks has also produced Home Safe documentaries based in other cities across Canada.

The following article appeared in the June 2009 issue of Chatelaine magazine and features the work of the SkyWorks Foundation and their Home Safe Calgary project:

“Home Safe Calgary is a film documentary produced by Laura Sky, SkyWorks Foundation, Toronto, Ontario . . . ”

VICTORIA IMMIGRANT & REFUGEE CENTER SOCIETY

VIRCS logo The Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Center Society (VIRCS) located in Victoria, BC, received a grant in July 2008 in support of their Multicultural Environmental Education Program (MEEP). With a growing immigrant population in Victoria, coupled with economic & environmental uncertainty, VIRCS's project, along with other essential services, offers a safe, welcoming place for people adjusting and learning about their new home environments. VIRCS is the only immigrant and refugee settlement agency in Canada to incorporate environmental education into their programming. The CDF is pleased to have partnered in this ground breaking initiative.

“Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Center Society is Caring for People, and Caring for the Planet with their Multicultural Environmental Education Program. . .”
